Lesson One
Is the World Real?
Everything that we experience, we experience inside our heads, leading to the intriguing question: Maybe there is no existence outside of our minds? But perhaps a more fundamental question would be: What practical difference does it make if the world is real or not?
Lesson Two
Is Time Travel Possible?
Is time the engine that drives the whole of existence, or is it just a product of our subjective experience? If the future is impenetrable, the past irretrievable, and the present moment too fleeting to meaningfully inhabit, what part of our lives can we call our own?
Lesson Three
Why does evil exist?
Why do bad things happen to good people? The question has been asked—and answered—for thousands of years. But even if we understood the purpose of evil, would this make it more palatable and acceptable? Would it aid us in our efforts to defeat evil?
Lesson Four
Who is G-d?
What are we talking about when we talk about G-d? Is “G-d” just a word we use when we can’t explain something? If G-d cannot be explained or described, does this not render the concept of “belief in G-d” completely meaningless?
Lesson Five
What is consciousness?
All injustice and strife, and even personal unhappiness, can be traced to selfishness. Yet self-esteem is essential for a healthy psyche and a productive life. To navigate this paradox, we first need to unravel the mystery of self-awareness: Where does our sense of self come from?
Lesson Six
Are we bound by fate?
If G-d already knows what we will do tomorrow, is our “free choice” nothing more than an illusion? And with so many powerful influences outside of our control—or even our awareness—influencing our choices, how “free” could they possibly be?

The Rohr Jewish Learning Institute (JLI) presents Great Debates in Jewish History, a six-session course exploring six fundamental conflicts that pit the greatest Jewish minds against each other–six instances of vastly divergent perspectives from throughout our history, including several that remain questions for us today.
Shabbos, says the Talmud, is G-d’s gift to the Jewish people – and what a gift it is! It offers respite from labor and a break from the intrusion of our ubiquitous technologies. It allows family and community the time to connect and reflect without distraction. The warm smell of challah, the glowing candles and the comfort of ritual all leave their imprint, shaping forever the meaning of family, peoplehood and one’s place in the universe.
Yet to many, Shabbos is archaic, restrictive and daunting and it is therefore altogether ignored. The objective of this course is to remove the barriers that keep people from enjoying what Shabbos has to offer. We invite women of every level of observance to experience the mystery of this most precious of Jewish treasures on their own level. This mitzvah is not an all-or-nothing proposition, and so this course provides multiple entry points so that students at every level of affiliation can explore meaningful ways to enrich their lives with the lessons of Shabbos.
In our course, “Heroines of the Bible: Her Story – My Story”, we will explore the struggles and challenges, the celebration and redemption, of six key personalities who are central figures in the history of the Jewish people. Empowered by their uniquely feminine qualities and prophetic vision, they inspired not only the women of their respective generations, but also the people as a whole, to identify with their personal mission and spiritual purpose. Today, living in our modern world, we too can connect with these great women, and by tapping into their stories we can attain personal fulfillment and success within our very own stories.
